Description

Quadratic Formula

The Formula

Unlike some of the other techniques discussed, the quadratic formula is a way to solve any quadratic equation of the form y = ax2 + bx + c. Substituting the values of a, b, and c into the equation below and simplifying will result in the solutions of the equation.

The Quadratic Formula is: QuadForm.

To see how the formula can be derived by completing the square of y = ax2 + bx + c, select the link below:

Example 1

Solve the quadratic equation x2 - x - 12 = 0 by using the quadratic formula.

Step 1. Determine the values of a, b, and c.

For this equation a = 1, b = -1, and c = -12.

Step 2. Substitute the values of a, b, and c into the formula.

Example 2

Solve the quadratic equation 2x2 + 3x + 12 = 0 by using the quadratic formula.

Step 1. Determine the values of a, b, and c.

For this equation a = 2, b = 3, and c = 12.

Step 2. Substitute the values of a, b, and c into the formula.
